An Itinerary for a 4th floor of Emily Carr Dérive was my MFA thesis exhibition. I spent the entirety of my second year traveling around the 4th floor of Emily Carr where the graduate studios are located and made small oil sketches on masonite of my surroundings. I would sit in these spaces, hallways and classrooms, and look at the details that surrounded me. I would focus on the angles of light fixtures, the curving shapes and shiny surfaces of ceiling air ducts, colours I could augment or completely change, experiments in composition. I tried to paint quickly and with expression. For some, I wanted to capture the essence of a place, for others, I wanted to invent, creating new spaces. I wanted figurative and abstract to sit side by side.
In the end, I made two large scale paintings from two of my sketches and exhibited them all together. |
